My Internet Connection was Down

Sunday afternoon my Internet connection went out. While I waited for the technician to show up, which was an all day wait yesterday, gave me time to reflect on how dependent one becomes on the Internet. First thing in the morning, right after my husband and I say a prayer, I check my email to prioritize which ones get my attention and which ones go in the delete bin. All those letters from some poor widow in Nigeria having to get rid of her husband's millions and she wants to give it all to me. Sorry, not biting. After that, I check to see if anyone responded to one of my posts; approve responses unless overly abusive.  Called the Internet provider and the call center said I would be on the list for repair today. My normal morning tasks are usually completed by 7:30 A.M. as it is not yet 7:00 too early to start making my phone calls, which will have to be made on the cell, so played solitaire until a more appropriate hour.

By 9:00 A.M. I made my phone calls and would have searched the news, checked the White House website for any updates, see if anything strikes my interest for an article, and then would be writing my opinion on the latest going on with the government.

Instead of searching the net, I am listening to FOX News, the economy, two tragic plane crashes, a police chase with money flying out the window of the suspect vehicle, and a female Japanese robot. I contemplated if I should write about Obama's interview on 60 Minutes, or get up and load the dishwasher. Considering I couldn't connect to the Internet to find out what he actually said, and just commenting on Obama being asked if he was "punch drunk", I opted to load the dishwasher.

When I got back to the computer, I discovered that my modem must have connected with the Internet for a brief moment, as the computer now tells me I have 22 emails waiting my attention, more letters from the widow I suppose. Changed the desktop display from yellow tulips to an American flag, a soaring eagle, three crosses at sunrise, beautiful but too bright, back and forth and finally settled on a single cross at sunrise, looks very nice. Checked to see what maintenance is due for the computer.

FOX News in their "jazzy" new studio is reporting that Geithner has come up with a plan, another bailout, or at least that is what I understood them to mean. They broke with another teaser about the police chase with money flying out the window of the drug suspect vehicle and showing clips of people collecting the money, though the shots were not always of the persons better side.

Called the Internet provider the technician should be at the house between 4 and 6 PM. That gave me a chance to run out for a few minutes to get some errands done. Upon my return I now needed to re-charge my cell phone as it is my only way to make or receive phone calls. The dishwasher now in the dry cycle, flipped the handle to allow the dishes to air dry instead of using electricity. The modem still won't connect to the Internet, wasn't surprised but was hoping it may have repaired itself.

Apparently, the stock market liked the plan that Geithner came up with to help the banks recover, as the market was up almost 500 points by the end of the day. The talking heads are discussing whether the plan will work, some think it will others think it won't. For all our sakes, I pray that the plan works.

While waiting for the tech to arrive I did make some progress around the house, I located my missing sewing basket hiding itself away in the back of a closet in a spare room, which we only go into once or twice a year. I know this isn't something to launch fireworks over, though it might rate a 3 man marching band playing They're Coming to Take Me Away on Kazoos. Anyone remember that little ditty?

Does it bug anyone when calling in for repair, either you are given a time-period between 8-4 or if narrowed down is usually either lunch or supper time. Maybe we should invite them to dinner so they will at least show up on time. The repairmen got here about 4:30 and my Internet was back in working order about half an hour later. Now to take care of what should have been done by 7:30. Now to finish the article and start over tomorrow, which by now is today.
